When I started my business, I grew it at light speed.
As soon as I committed to achieving my version of success (which, at the time, meant quitting my job), I promised myself it would happen no matter what.
Like many of you, I paid attention to everything when I was building my business. I analyzed what people were offering, how they presented their offers, and the branding choices they made. I soaked it all in.
But here’s the truth: when I started to do things the way everyone else was doing them, it just felt… weird.
Breaking the “Plug-and-Play” Mold
Our industry is saturated with “plug-and-play” templates, methodologies, and strategies. While these can provide a starting point, I quickly realized I didn’t want a pre-packaged business. I wanted something that reflected me.
So, instead of simply following what I saw, I did two things:
- I asked why. I sought to understand the purpose behind popular strategies and considered how they might work for me.
- I looked for a better way. I never assumed that just because a “guru” was doing something, it was the best or only way.
For me, the key to real growth wasn’t copying the rules; it was breaking them.
Building a Business My Way
Here’s what that looked like for me:
- Pivoting: I pivoted until I found my sweet spot (spoiler: it’s Dreampro’s Done-For-You (DFY) course creation services).
- Launching Imperfectly: Some of my best offers started as typo-filled Google Docs shared with passion.
- Prioritizing Clients Over Content: Instead of churning out endless free mini-trainings, I focused on serving my current clients and building referrals.
- Creating Passion-Driven Offers: Every offer I created aligned with what I was truly obsessed with—not just something to fill a gap.
- Setting Boundaries: I said “no” to clients who weren’t the right fit.
- Clearing Mental Clutter: I unfollowed others in my field to stay rooted in my expertise and perspective.
The more rules I broke, the more deeply I connected with my audience, the more fulfilled I felt, and the more income I generated.
