Course Creation & Business Growth
When I started my business, I had an unwavering determination to succeed. For the first couple of months, I wasn’t making any money, but after some slow starts, things began to take off. I set a goal to hit $20K months by the end of the year, and I reached that goal months earlier than planned.
What made the difference? I decided to grow my business my way. Here’s how I did it and how these lessons can help you create and grow your course-based business.
How I Determined My Own Way Forward
From the start, I immersed myself in learning everything I could. I researched, studied others in the industry, and tried implementing their strategies. But you know what? It didn’t always work for me.
It didn’t feel right to follow what everyone else was doing. I didn’t want to be just another designer or coach. I wanted to bring my unique perspective to my business and, more importantly, to the courses I was creating for clients.
Here’s what I learned:
- Many “plug-and-play” strategies promise success if you follow a specific template. But these templates don’t account for your individuality or your audience’s specific needs.
- Chasing trends or “shiny objects” often leads to copying others and losing your unique voice.
If you’re creating a course, don’t just follow a template for the sake of it. Take inspiration from others but adapt it to suit your expertise and the transformation you want to provide for your audience.
How My Way Manifested
Following my intuition allowed me to grow my business in ways that felt right for me. Here’s how this showed up:
- Pivoting Until I Found My Zone of Genius:
I shifted directions several times before finding the sweet spot that aligned with my skills and passion. The same applies to creating courses—be willing to refine your content and approach until it resonates with your audience. - Redefining Launching:
I focused on backend launching and ignored the idea that launches had to be flashy or complicated. When selling your course, keep it simple and tailored to your audience’s needs. - Prioritizing Clients Over Content:
Instead of spending all my energy creating free content, I focused on delivering exceptional results for current clients. For your course, this means prioritizing quality over quantity—design a course that delivers the transformation your clients need. - Creating Offers I Loved:
Every offer I created was something I was 100% passionate about. Your course should excite you; if you’re passionate about it, your clients will feel that energy. - Saying No to the Wrong Fit:
I learned to turn down clients who weren’t the right fit. Similarly, your course should target your ideal audience—don’t try to appeal to everyone. - Staying True to My Voice:
By unfollowing others in my niche, I avoided regurgitating ideas and stayed accountable to my own expertise. For course creators, this means focusing on your unique perspective instead of replicating someone else’s framework.
The more rules I broke, the more fulfilled I felt—and the more profitable my business became.
Things You Can Do to Grow Your Course-Based Business
Whether you’re building a business, creating a course, or both, here’s what I recommend:
1. Learn Strategies, But Ask Why
Take inspiration from others, but don’t just follow blindly. Decipher the thought process behind their strategies to decide if they’re right for you and your course.
2. Follow Your Intuition
Your gut feelings are powerful. If something doesn’t feel right, trust that instinct.
3. Work with People You Trust
Whether it’s a coach, mentor, or course creation expert, surround yourself with people who support and inspire you.
4. Don’t Be Afraid to Innovate
If your course idea hasn’t been done before, that’s a good thing! And if it has, use your unique perspective to make it stand out.
5. Have Fun
Building a course and business should be enjoyable. If you’re having fun, your enthusiasm will attract the right people.
The Bottom Line
I was able to grow my business fast by doing things my way. While speed may not be your goal, creating something authentic, enjoyable, and impactful should be.
